Prior to COVID 19, face to face interviews were almost a must in order to hire someone. Weight was given for the interviewer’s behavior, body language and even appearance. It could be also a disadvantage as many interviewers were establishing opinions based on irrelevant facts.
During Covid 19, companies had to adjust to a new style of working in order to remain productive. This means a massive transition into remote work. While many companies and organizations announced layoffs, some grew during the crisis and had the need for employee developers. In those cases also the interview process had to be readjusted, it is impossible to assume that you can run the same hiring process via online applications like zoom or google hangouts. As well you should keep in mind that there might be a probability that the people you are talking to were affected by the pandemic, either losing their job or even had a family member getting sick. Be sensitive!!
Here are a few tips for better video interviewing: 1. Make sure that you have stable Internet connectivity and no other distractions that could interfere with the interview 2. Remember that first impressions count and candidates see you as the representative of the company 3. Ask how they feel about remote work and what helps them be productive 4. The dressing is also crucial, even though you feel very comfortable with your Pjas, it is not suitable for an interview.
Remote interviewing is here to stay and if you follow the right steps, you will benefit from it. In the latest survey taken by Moody’s it was reported that 39% of the developers feel more productive working remotely.
